The Sensei We Knew & Loved

While Zen is more well-known in the West, Jodo Shinshu is the largest sect of Buddhism in Japan, and its organization in the United States is the Buddhist Churches of America. 

Our local BCA Sensei recently moved back to Japan to inherit his family’s temple, which has been passed down from father to son for 500 years.

Before his family was Shinshu, they were long ago a Zen family. Because of this, he saw equality between Zen and Pure Land, and he taught both the Nembutsu and zazen.
